Facebook has undergone amazing growth in the last year. At the beginning of 2009, they were already seeing almost a hundred million words a day posted in status updates — well over a thousand per second during peak times. That number is up by a factor of four in the past year, peaking at many thousand per second.
With so many people posting so many words facebook have a wealth of data about what has happened on Facebook and in the world at large in the last year. Whether it is snow in Austin or the death of Michael Jackson, as soon as it happens Facebook users post about it. Compiling all of this data and comparing it to the same data from 2008, they came up with the top 15 trends of 2009 on Facebook.
